Worktops

Six materials, each at its own thickness and with its own edge. Drawn in section at full scale, with what they take and what they dislike.

The sections

The edges at full scale.

To scale on a standard screen: 1 mm drawn is roughly 1 mm in reality.

Natural stone (gabbro, granite)

30 mm

Section of a 30 mm black stone worktop, softened edge, speckled grain.

Thickness and edge
30 mm, softened edge (2 mm radius)
Heat
takes a hot pan set down briefly
Stains
good while the sealer is maintained; oil can mark untreated stone
Acids
good for gabbro and most granites
Scratches
very good: the knife wears before the stone
Knocks on the edge
good; a chip on the edge can be filled with resin
Care
water and mild soap; reseal every one to two years depending on use
Price
from CHF 780 per linear metre, installed Indicative prices of a fictitious company

Quartzite (very hard natural stone)

20 mm

Section of a 20 mm grey quartzite worktop, square edge, long veins.

Thickness and edge
20 mm, square edge, arris eased by hand
Heat
very good
Stains
good once sealed
Acids
good: its quartz does not react to lemon or vinegar
Scratches
very good
Knocks on the edge
good; a square edge is more exposed than a softened one
Care
water and mild soap; sealed on installation, then as needed
Price
from CHF 1’100 per linear metre, installed Indicative prices of a fictitious company

Quartz (engineered stone)

20 mm

Section of a 20 mm charcoal quartz worktop, light chamfer, even colour.

Thickness and edge
20 mm, light 2 mm chamfer
Heat
low: the resins mark under a hot pan, always use a trivet
Stains
very good: non-porous, no sealing
Acids
good
Scratches
good
Knocks on the edge
good
Care
water and mild soap; no abrasive cleaners
Price
from CHF 650 per linear metre, installed Indicative prices of a fictitious company

Sintered ceramic (large format, fired at high temperature)

12 mm

Section of a 12 mm black sintered ceramic worktop, 1 mm chamfer, matt finish.

Thickness and edge
12 mm, light 1 mm chamfer to protect the arris
Heat
very good
Stains
very good
Acids
very good
Scratches
very good
Knocks on the edge
weak point: a knock on the arris can chip it; at 12 mm we prefer a flush-mounted sink to an undermount one
Care
water and soap, or diluted vinegar; no sealing
Price
from CHF 850 per linear metre, installed Indicative prices of a fictitious company

Stainless steel (brushed sheet on a substrate)

40 mm

Section of a brushed stainless steel worktop: sheet folded over a substrate, 40 mm visible edge.

Thickness and edge
40 mm, 1.2 to 1.5 mm sheet folded over a substrate, 40 mm visible edge (depending on the model)
Heat
very good
Stains
very good; fingerprints show
Acids
good; rinse off salt and bleach
Scratches
low: fine scratches build into an even patina
Knocks on the edge
good; a hard knock can dent the sheet
Care
microfibre cloth along the brushing
Price
from CHF 900 per linear metre, installed Indicative prices of a fictitious company

Marble (dark veined marble)

20 mm

Section of a 20 mm dark veined marble worktop, softened edge.

Thickness and edge
20 mm, softened edge (3 mm radius)
Heat
good
Stains
fair: wine and oil mark if left
Acids
low: lemon and vinegar dull the surface (it is a limestone)
Scratches
fair
Knocks on the edge
fair
Care
wipe straight away; seal every year; the patina is part of the material
Price
from CHF 950 per linear metre, installed Indicative prices of a fictitious company

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a hot pan on the worktop?

On natural stone, quartzite, sintered ceramic and stainless steel, yes, briefly. On quartz, no: its resins mark. A trivet is still good practice everywhere.

Why does the worktop come after the cabinets?

The template is taken on the installed cabinets, not from a drawing: walls are never straight. Cutting then takes one to two weeks at the stonemason’s.

Describe the room, we come back with an appointment.

Drawings and photos welcome. Reply within two working days.
